Billing itself as an ‘anti-art school’, Dr Sketchy’s is life drawing classes with a difference. It was found back in 2005 by Ms Molly Crabapple and since then groups have slung up all over the globe, recently launched in Bristol. I’ve been helping founder, Boo (aka Lou Leigh Blue) with music and photography at the events.
With it’s reputation for cutting-edge urban art and a lively performance scene, it’s the perfect location for Dr Sketchy’s and in the three sessions so far, artists have been able to draw a wide variety of burlesque, circus and cabaret performers. The Bristol branch was launched earlier in 2013 by burlesque performer, body-piercer and freelance photographer, Boo and has already pulled in a vibrant and varied crowd from graffiti fans to fine artists through to enthusiastic first-time scribblers, producing a giddying array of different styles, which you can enjoy on the Dr Sketchy’s Bristol tumblr and Facebook pages.
Each Dr Sketchy class lasts three-hours but the time flies as the fun-filled, amazing costumes and burlesque performances. Unlike the hush of a typical art class, the informal location above one an Old Market pub is relaxed and informal with groovy b-movie and psychadelic music.
Events take place every two months and spaces are often limited, so keep and eye on the internet to book your place as soon as possible.
