As late summer becomes ealry autumn it’s a wonderful time for location family photography in the countryside or parkland. Leaves are starting to turn yellow and brown and late afternoon bring in warm golden light earlier, giving a romantic or mystical look to the photographs.
Early autumn light contains warm hues, which contain more yellow and red than the cooler blueish tones earlier in the day, mixing into orangey golds. It’s very flattering for all subjects. I very rarely use on-location flash at this time of year. You simply can’t improve of nature’s light. I’ll perhaps use a simple hand-held reflector, perhaps with a gold foil panel, to act as a fill and further enhance the light.

The final hour before dusk, what photographers call the golden hour, comes in that much earlier when younger children are still wide awake. Autumn clothing allows for much variety for parents and kids to play with hats, boots and accessories. Earthy coloured clothing work well for a ‘melding into the landscape’ look but contrasting rich blues, reds, teals can also look fantastic.
Autumn photographs are great for giving as Christmas gifts to relatives or including on a family Christmas card. If you would like to book a photoshoot, drop me a line.
