Recently, I’ve been traveling around the Bristol area putting on photoshoots in people’s homes. All I need is at least a 12×12″ space, preferably more, and it’s possible to take real, studio quality portraits.
Clients love this approach. They don’t have to travel to a studio in a hurry and a sweat, trying to round up the kids. If they have a change of hearts on what outfit they’d like to wear, they only have to pop upstairs to their wardrobe. The kind of equipment used – large professional flash lights and high-resolution digital cameras with professional lenses – are the same as a big name high street studio.
This ‘studio at home’ is made possible by a special hollow background that can be filled with light to create a pure white ‘hi key’ background on fraction of the space that that style of lighting has traditionally required. Just one large flash head is enough to light it evenly.
Clearly, working this way has fewer overheads than a high street studio and I happily pass on a large saving to the clients, who will see their images on a website where they can order prints at their leisure. Larger frame prints or canvases to take pride of place in a family living room can also be arranged.
